Built in 1908, The Fairmont Empress Hotel is one of Victoria’s most majestic buildings. While we weren’t there when the first slate roof went on, our family has been caring for it continuously since 1967, the last 23 years as Grist Slate and Tile Roofing Inc.
As the city’s top hotel and tourist attraction, it is extremely important to The Fairmont Empress Hotel to keep the almost 90,000 square feet (900 sq) of slate in top notch condition.
Our use of top quality products, rapid response, and exceptional workmanship has built our reputation over the years.
Grist Slate and Tile roofing has the envious task of replacing the 900 square slate roof. November 1988 Grist Slate and Tile Roofing started to remove the slates on the connector wing in preparation for the construction of the new entrance tower. Over the next 12 months we completed installation of the roof decking, underlay, slate and related flashings for this amazing new addition to the hotel.
1990 was the beginning of the re-roofing project. Year after year, section-by-section, we have been pouring our hearts and souls into installing the highest quality of roof possible for such an important historical building in the heart Victoria.
The Fairmont Empress Hotel contains many unique rooflines and presents many challenges to those who wish to preserve it. This roofing project challenges us in ways that no other roof in Victoria can. We feel it is an honor and a privilege to be part of the restoration and maintenance of the jewel of Victoria – The Empress Hotel. For more information on The Fairmont Empress, please visit:
